Printing plates are an essential component in the printmaking process. They serve as the surface from which the ink will be transferred onto the printing surface. The type of printing plate used will depend on the specific requirements of the printing project.

 

Lithography Plates:

 

Lithography plates are made of a smooth surface of limestone or aluminum. This type of printing plate is primarily used for printing high-quality images, such as photographs and artwork. The lithographic printing process involves the use of a chemical reaction between a grease-based image and a water-based solution.

 

The image is drawn or painted onto the surface of the plate using greasy materials such as crayons, pencils or ink. The plate is then etched with an acidic solution, which causes the non-image areas to attract water and the image areas to repel it. When ink is applied to the plate, it adheres to the greasy image areas, and the water applies itself to the non-image areas of the plate.

 

The ink is then transferred to the paper through a press. The result is a high-quality print that is both sharp and crisp with a smooth finish. The lithography process can be used for printing on a range of different materials, including paper, cardstock, and plastics.

 

Flexography Plates:

 

Flexography printing is a process commonly used in the food packaging industry. This type of printing plate is made of a flexible rubber or plastic material designed to be mounted onto a printing press. The plate holds the ink that is used to print images or text onto the surface of the printing substrate, usually a roll of plastic film or paper.

 

Flexography printing is ideal for printing on a range of different materials such as corrugated cardboard, plastic film, and metallic materials. This printing method is best suited for long print runs, as it is a more efficient and cost-effective process than other printing methods.

 

Gravure Plates:

 

Gravure printing is a process that uses a cylinder rather than a flat plate for printing. The cylinder is typically made from copper or steel and is engraved with microscopic cells of varying sizes and depths. The engraved cells hold the ink that is transferred onto the substrate.

 

Gravure printing is often used for printing high-quality images, such as photographs, and is also used for printing large volumes on flexible and non-porous materials such as packaging and wallpaper. The gravure printing process is highly efficient and is capable of producing large quantities of prints quickly.
